Important Tips About Cleaning & Sealing...

Sealants

When installed correctly Pattern Imprinted Concrete can prove to be a fabulous addition to any home, it can provide longevity and reliability over many years. However as with all exterior surfaces it does need an element of specilaist maintenance. No matter who installed a PIC driveway it is important to understand that it will require resealing every 2- 4 years dependant upon the wear and tear it deals with. Many homeowners dont realise that many of the general sealants you can buy from your local DIY store, will not help your concrete. In fact they often can totally change the appearance and have irreversible damaging effects. The chemicals within these sealants can often prove extremely difficult to remove (when they can be removed) and is an expensive process. Please bare this in mind, the next time you get a knock at the door by someone who says they will seal your driveway, at a cheap price because they are in the area! Generally these one man bands looking to earn some extra pocket money, have no experience or training in this area and will offer inferior sealants, or worse still apply the wrong sealant. That driveway you spent so much money on, could... dare we say it.... be a waste of money through the negligence of the wrong application of sealant. In summary, if a sealant is to be used on any paving, it's well worth spending a that bit more and getting a quality product, rather than trying to do it on the cheap and then being clobbered with re-application costs in the none-too-distant future.

Block Paving and loss of sand

Annually, some people may attempt to clean the areas from weed and algae growth using a house hold power washer. In this case we stress on the importance of replacing and brushing back in the correct amount of a fine kiln dried silca sand, without this component over time your driveway will suffer. Please read further detailed information about this area by clicking this link POWER WASHING.

Efflorescence

All concrete products may, in their early life, appear to lose some intensity of colour and experience a milky-white stain on the face of the product. This is efflorescence staining. It is a temporary phenomenon and is in no way detrimental to the performance of the material. Clay products may also suffer from a temporary white stain called efflorescence. This is quite different from efflorescence in concrete products and is caused by soluble salts within the clay being transported by water to the surface as they dry out.

Maintenance

Paving materials require periodic cleaning to maintain their appearance. Regular sweeping to prevent the build-up of detritus is recommended. Light coloured blocks, whilst structurally sound for driveway use, do emphasise tyre marks and oil spills on the driveway. It must be accepted that these products will need more maintenance if the overall appearance is to be maintained. Proprietary cleaning agents are widely available and details of which are always given upon completing of any new drive or patio. Care should be taken when buying cleaning agents as some varieties contain a concentration of acid, which can adversely affect the appearance of concrete products, clay and natural stone. In certain circumstances, prolonged contact with wet leaves can result in staining of the paved area. Such contact should be avoided wherever practical.

fly-by-night flaggers and
dodgy DIY men…..

They turn up on your estate unannounced.
They offer to cut back those overgrown trees, tarmac your drive or clean your guttering for a knock-down price. They do a lousy job and hang around just long enough for you to pay them. Then they’re gone.
There are plenty of just such con-merchants operating in our borough and it’s a tough job keeping track of them. They generally operate with a mobile which is designed to make it very difficult for their customers to get hold of them again. The sad fact is that when they’ve done a runner with your cash it’s usually too late. A genuine trader will hapilly give there details. We recommend that you should always use the services of a local firm with a fixed landline number and a reputable address.

Tarmac Sealing Scams

With Spring quickly approching the number of homeowners that will be scammed by fake driveway sealing companies this year will be huge.

As a driveway sealer I know about some of the scams that these con artists like to pull. I got to hear all about them when I went door to door asking people if they would like their driveways sealed.

Most slammed the door in my face while others took the time to tell me how the last person that came around offering to seal their driveway took their money and never finished the job. As you can imagine I had to work extra hard to win their business.

There are essentially 2 kinds of scams that the fraudulent driveway sealers would use.

Up Front Payment Scam

When someone offers to seal your driveway they usually don’t have the equipment with them at that moment. Some of the material required is heavy and not that easy to bring to every house on a street. So if you agree to have your driveway sealed, they are going to make an appointment with you. At that time they will ask for the money right away, usually cash is requested and they might offer a cash discount if you do. (Most professional sealers will not offer cash discounts, only mulitple driveway discounts or something like that)

Just as you might suspect, the “Driveway Sealer” doesn’t show up and you are out the cash.

Motor Oil Sealant

This one is less common but is used in a lot of residential areas. Basically the person or company sealing your driveway uses used motor oil instead of the proper professional grade sealant. This is applied either using a sprayer or rolled on and looks pretty good at first. Until it rains at least, then most of it washes away. Leaving your driveway in a mess with patchy areas and oil stains everywhere. It can even stain your pavement and curbs.

Protecting Against Driveway Scams

Your best defense against these types of scams is to stick with a reputable company that is well trusted. Constructive Driveways and also Paving Shield are one such company that has earned a great reputation by doing a quality job at a resonable price. You can visit them at Pavingshield

If you insist on having your driveway sealed by a smaller or lesser known sealer make sure that you do not pay until the job is complete.
